Daniel Porciello

Danny, 49, joined the TGC in 2004. A New York-Bred through and through, he was born and raised in Astoria, Queens. Today Danny lives with his lovely wife Bernadette and their three children Jaclyn (17), Tori (13) and Danny (10) in Bethpage, NY. Danny began his professional career as a NY City firefighter (FDNY) in 1987 and spent his FDNY career in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After a 22 year career in the FDNY, Danny is retiring in October of 2008. He quips, "I'm hanging up my boots!”. Upon his retirement he is taking a career as a professional handicapper. Danny’s older brother is fellow TGCer Rich Schulhoff.

Danny first became interested in thoroughbred racing in the early 1970’s after a family trip to Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, NJ. And ever since that seashore vacation he has been as astute observer of Thoroughbred racing.

Favorite Food? “First is a good broiled Veal Chop and second is a Cold Seafood Salad with Calamari and Scungilli”

Favorite Restaurant? “Triple dead heat: My first favorite is One If By Land Two If By Sea in NY City. My second favorite is Parkside in Corona, Queens. My favorite lunch spot is Joe’s Shanghai in Flushing, Queens”

Favorite Racetracks? “Saratoga and Keeneland”

Favorite Racetrack Story? "On a racetrack trip to Keeneland and Churchill Downs and after three days at Keeneland, we ventured over to Churchill Downs for two days of racing. On the last day with a 5-day hangover, I went on to pick 7 winners in a row, all at good prices. We were sitting in a box and after about the third winner we were getting a bit excited and the people in the boxes around us were starting to take an interest and began to follow my progress. At that point we drew a crowd who were all rooting for me and picked up on my good run and with every race they were cheering me on. After the 7th winner they all clapped for me and had me hold up seven fingers for my seven winners. It was a good day. P.S. Can the Beach Girls top that story?”
